Hair Salon Services

IMG_3259.JPGHey guys!! Sorry I have been MIA! April has been a busy month for me and I will have several posts over the next couple of days. One topic that I wanted to discuss was Hair Salon Services. I went to Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago and got my hair done by my amazing hairstylist and we got to talking about what services you can do at home and what you should ALWAYS go to a salon for, so I thought I would talk about a few!

  1. Hair coloring – I cannot stress how important it is to go to a salon when getting any type of coloring done to your hair. Box hair coloring can be so unpredictable, and let’s face it, we aren’t in high school anymore (and if you are – STAY AWAY FROM THE BOXED HAIR DYE). Seriously, so much can go wrong when you try to dye your hair on your own. Depending on the tones of your natural hair will have the color react in different ways. This can mean that the super blonde you want will turn orange in your hair. Take it from me (a girl who has tried and failed the whole box coloring thing), go to professional the first time. You will save soooo much money!
  2. Hair cutting – First of all, do you see the fancy shears that hair stylist have?? Yeah, they are super sharp and super accurate. Your scissors at home will not cut hair the same way. So please don’t try to cut your bangs at home. I have seen soooo many terrible videos where someone tries to cut their hair and ends up destroying it! Do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and go to see a professional the first time. You don’t want to be remembered by those ugly short bangs across your forehead, do you?
  3. Hair updos – Are you attending an event and would like to do a nice updo/hairstyle? Well there are so many youtube videos & blogs with step-by-step tutorials and how to’s, that this is definitely something you can do on your own! Check out a few of mine by clicking on the “Hair” page across the top! I will suggest that if you want something super complicated, talk to your hairstylist first to see if it is something you can do on your own!

Hope you enjoyed reading this post about a few different services I think you can do at home versus going to a salon. What hair service do you do at home? Comment below!

How To: Outdoor Run Hairstyle

Hi loves!

Happy Saturday!! Today is a super easy hairstyle for when I run outside!

First, I put my hair in a ponytail low enough to put a hat on. Next, I put in my hat and get it comfortable. I hate when my hair pulls or feels awkward in my hat, so I adjust the ponytail until it feels right. Finally, I braid my pony tail. I like braiding the ponytail so that it is all put together. When I wear my in a regular ponytail it swings a lot and pieces get stuck to my arms or back. The braid minimizes this effect.

Here is a picture of the look before I went for my run! And after 5 miles it was still neatly put together!

Hope you have a fabulous Saturday! If you try this hairstyle, make sure to Instagram #gapeachhairaffair so I can check it out!

How To: Washing My Hair

I always get the question asked, how does your hair look so shiny and healthy? Well, I think it attributes to 2 things:

  1. My bomb digity hair dresser that has been doing my hair since college and saving it one split end at a time. Seriously, she is amazing and I LOVE her. Want to know how much? I live in Atlanta and go to Jacksonville sometimes just to get my hair done (and see my family, of course). But really though, there have been weekends where I know I need it done (like right now my roots could use some touch up) and I will go down for a quick trip so that she can do my hair! She helps me keep it looking so shiny and healthy 365 days of the year!
  2. How I wash my hair plays a huge part! First of all, I don’t wash it every day because a) too much conditioner in my hair is NOT a good thing and b) I have soooo much hair that it would be a hassle to wash it every day! So what do I do between wash days? I use dry shampoo! Check out this post for all of my favorite shampoos, conditioners and dry shampoos! And check out this post to see how I get away with after-gym hair! I only wash my hair 2 times a week (and if I can go less, I do).
    • When shampooing my hair, I focus on the roots. This is where most of the oils and dirt build up over the course of a couple of days and any product you put in stays at the roots. This helps make sure you hair is clean (and looks clean) while not drying out your ends where the most damage from heat is (bye bye split ends).
    • When conditioning my hair, I focus on the ends! You probably could have guessed that from where I was heading with this post, but it is true, I focus more on the ends of my hair than the roots (but of course I work it throughout to get rid of all the tangles). This helps those dry and damaged ends to give you a healthy looking shine from root (the newest, healthiest part of your hair) to ends (the oldest, most damaged part).
    • When I use dry shampoo, I make sure to use a small amount. This is to ensure I don’t over use the dry shampoo, as I want to make sure it looks nice and clean, not dry and damaged!

I hope this posts helps you! I also notice that my hair color can impact how healthy it looks. When I have my blonde ombre for summer, my hair looks more dry and damaged due to the damage from changing the color and all the sun my hair is getting. When my hair is dark, it tends to look a lot more shiny and healthy. If this is something you notice, talk to your hair dresser about ways to help improve the healthiness of your hair. I love to use Moroccan oil when my hair is still wet. This helps hydrate my hair and helps with the frizzy pieces and fly aways!  Remember, something that helps one person, doesn’t always help everyone, these are just things I have noticed over the years!

Braids to Waves

IMG_3119

Ever wondered how to get easy beach waves without all the hassle? Well here you go! I do this hairstyle at night and then sleep in the braids so that I can get some waves the next day. As you will see in the video, I used dutch braids (check out this post for the difference between dutch braids and French braids). I just like the way the waves look when I take them out the next day. I also used my “Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Spray” which I absolutely love to use when wearing my hair like this (check out this post for where to buy this spray)!

This was a super easy hairstyle and the next morning I just took out the braids, added some beach spray to my hair and was good to go! Check out the video below!

Thanks for watching! And remember, if you try out this hairstyle #gapeachhairaffair on Instagram so I can check it out!

French vs Dutch Braid

IMG_3063

Hey guys! My mom asked me a while ago why I did a dutch braid vs a French braid in one of my videos… I typically will wear both braids but it depends on the look I am going for will determine which braid I wear.

French:

  1. Going to the gym – this way it is secure and out of my face but not pulling too tight. See my video on this hairstyle here.
  2. I have several different videos where I have incorporated braids into my work hairstyle:
    • Braids with Buns – when I wear this hair style, I am going for a sleek look, so I usually want my hair flat, which is why I use the regular french braid.
    • This up-do – again, this style was meant to be easy and quick and the French braid lays flat, so you have some style, but it’s not too flashy.
    • This hairstyle – I had tried this hairstyle out for the first time when I did the video for it, so I went with the regular French braid, which I felt worked really well for this hairstyle!

I like that the French braid lays flat and looks sleek, which is why I tend to use that braid.

Dutch:

  1. I only have this hairstyle uploaded for the dutch braid. I like this braid when I want to give an edge to the look. Since my hair was curly, I wanted to add a bohemian look with the dutch braid. I don’t use this braid as much as the French braid, but I like both of the equally.

I like both of these braids equally and decided to make a video showing the two different braids. It really is up to your preference, as all the hairstyles I have included links to could be worn using either braid. Check out the video below!

Thanks for watch and reading! If you have any questions – feel free to leave a comment! As always, if you use any of the hairstyles, #gapeachhairaffair on Instagram for me to take a look!

New Wand!

Hey guys!  I’m headed to NYC today, but I wanted to post about my new wand!

So I posted last week that I ordered a new wand – and I am thrilled that it arrived  late last week and I got to play with it this past weekend! I ordered the Bombay 32mm Rose Gold Wand and it is fantastic! The curls it gives my hair are just so perfect and I received so many compliments on my hair the two days I wore the curls!

The things I love:

  1. It heats up super quick
  2. You can adjust the heat settings to be perfect for your hair
  3. It did not take long at all to get voluminous curls! Seriously, it only took me like 15 minutes after I blow dried my hair!
  4. The curls lasted days! I curled my hair Sunday and it’s now Friday and I just washed my hair, and the curls fell a little the first day, but besides a few touch ups, they lasted all week! Granted I only had my hair in a pony tail the last 2 days, but I was super impressed with how the curls held.
  5. Last, but definitely not least, the wand made my hair shiny and soft! I just wanted to brush my hands through it all day!

I can’t have a love list, without some cons:

  1. My hair definitely smelled a little burnt the first 2 days. I am not sure if it was due to the heat level or the fact that the wand is new, but I will be keeping an eye on this as I continue to use the wand. I will keep y’all posted!
  2. So I totally thought it was going to be a bigger barrel than it end up being, so there was definitely some disappointment there. This just means I will need to buy another wand!

All in all – I really do like this wand! The cons were not enough to make me wish I didn’t purchase this wand, and it may become my new tool that I use all the time! Here is a video of me using the wand:

As always, #gapeachhairaffair on Instagram so I can see your pictures!

Easy Up-do

img_2992

Hello 🙂

Here is a quick and easy up-do. It took me a total of 15 minutes (after letting my hair mostly air dry). This video is a super easy up-do that consists of a french braid from a corner and a bun (if you don’t know how to french braid, check out some of my other videos for step by step explanations). I have bangs, so I left them out for this video, but you can include all of your hair in the braid if you choose to do so! I hope you enjoy!

As always, if you try out this hairstyle #gapeachhairaffair on Instagram and I will check it out!
